Weeks/Wright Take First Trail Tourney On Sunapee

By:  Doug Hume

The 2014 TOC winning team of Peter Weeks and John Wright continued their winning ways with a victory in the first 2015 NEBA Trail Tournament on Lake Sunapee.  With an unusually warm week of weather preceding the tournament and a tournament day temperature approaching 90 degrees, teams needed to adjust to the fast warming waters.  All the teams fishing weighed a limit off smallmouth bass.  The teams that were able to bring a big fish to the scale were able to separate themselves from the field.

Weeks and Wright won with an impressive 4 fish limit of 14.89 pounds.  They weighed the tournament lunker as part of their limit, a 5.05 pound smallmouth.  They coupled that beauty with another smallmouth well over the four pound mark.  They used a variety of techniques to catch the winning bag of fish.  The team takes an early point lead in search of the 2015 NEBA Trail Championship and free entries into the 2016 Trail tournaments that goes with it.

The team of Rob Messenger and John Levesque took second place honors.  Their weight of 13.10 pounds included a 4.18 pound smally.  The veteran team of Robert Stasio and Stephen Smolski took third place honors. They weighed in a total of 12.82 pounds of smallmouth including a 4.03 pounder.  Jon Havens and John Krol were fourth.  The team weighed in 11.61 pounds with a 4.46 pound smally anchoring the bag.  The father/son team of John Hooper and John Hooper II rounded out the top five.  Most of the top teams took advantage of an early jerkbait bite along with a variety of soft plastics to land their fish.

The next NEBA of NH Trail Tournament is June 21st on Newfound Lake.  In addition to winning cash awards, teams will be looking to increase their point totals in order to earn a spot into the no entry fee NEBA of NH TOC.  Check elsewhere on this site for information on how to sign up for the remaining trail tournaments.

Messenger/Levesque Take Trail #2 on Newfound

Article by: Doug Hume

Despite some very rainy conditions for much of the day, the fish were biting for many of the NEBA of NH teams that fished the second of the five 2015 Trail Tournaments. For the second time in as many tournaments, every team weighed in a limit of smallmouth at the end of the event. Some teams were able to separate themselves from the pack though by catching some of Newfound’s big smallmouths.

The team of Rob Messenger and John Levesque took first place honors in the Father’s Day NEBA of NH Trail Tournament on Newfound Lake. The win followed up a second place finish on Sunapee in the inaugural 2015 Trail Tournament.  Messenger and Levesque weighed in a solid limit of four smallmouth totaling 13.87#. Their bag was anchored by a hefty 3.72# bronzeback. The team caught their winning bag on soft plastics in a variety of depths.

Second place was earned by the father/son team of John Hooper and John Hooper  II.  Their 13.39# bag included a 3.71# lunker.  Their second place check made for a nice Father’s Day present for the elder Hooper. The always consistent team of Chris Bolduc and Jay Faro captured third place. They weighed in another 13 plus pound limit with a 3.89 # beauty as their lunker.  Fourth place went to Dave Leblanc and John Vernalia. Their bag included the tournament lunker of 4.18#. Rounding out the top five was the new trail team of Jim Brandt and Mike Amicangioli..

After two events, the team of Messenger and Levesque lead the Trail standings followed by Hooper/Hooper II in second, and Leblanc and Vernalia in third. These teams, and others, are competing for first place in Trail points and the free entry to the 2016 Trail that goes with it.  With three events left, teams are also looking to earn their way into the season ending Tournament of Champions.  The next Trail event is July 26th on Winni.

The team of Rob Messenger and Josh Levesque earned second place money and points.  The team weighed in 21.77 pounds of fish.  Their bag consisted of 1 largemouth and 7 smallmouth.  It included the tournament lunker smallmouth at 3.00 pounds.

Doug Hume and Don Fales took third place with a mixed bag of fish weighing 20.03 pounds.  Their bag included the tournament lunker largemouth of 5.82 pounds.

Chris Bolduc and Jay Faro earned a fourth place finish with a 17.56 pound limit of bass.  Chris and Jay’s bag included a 4.52 pound largemouth.  The veteran team of Alan Cushing and George Veloza was fifth.  They reported catching fish all day and weighed in a 16.93 pound limit of smallmouth.

With only two trail tournaments remaining on the schedule, a clear leader for the trail championship has emerged.   The team of Rob Messenger and Josh Levesque has posted a victory and two seconds in the first three tournaments.  They have established a solid point lead for the Trail Championship.  The last two events are at the Connecticut River and Lake Winnisquam .  Teams will be looking for solid points finishes and an opportunity to fish in The 2015 NEBA of NH TOC.

Palmer & Raymond Take Trail #4
on the CT River!

August 8, 2015

Article by: Doug H.

Tournament #4 of the 2015 NEBA of NH Trail is in the books with the team of Rick Palmer and Dick Raymond taking the first place honors.  With little water being drawn through the dam and the bright sunny skies above, the bite was tough on the river.  Palmer and Raymond were able to catch a solid bag of 8 smallmouth to seal the victory.  Anchoring their bag was a lunker smallmouth of 2.91 pounds.  The team took a huge step towards locking up a TOC birth by scoring the top point finish of the day.

The team of John Hooper and John Hooper II, one of the Trails most consistent top finishing teams, were second.  They weighed in a limit of bass over fourteen pounds.  Jim Brandt and Mike Amicanguili placed third weighing in a limit of smallmouth.  The veteran team of Jon Oppenheim and Dave Sheils were fourth.  They also weighed in a limit of smallmouth.  On a day when the largemouth bite was largely off, the team of Chris Fisher and Scott Villeneuve weighed in the 3.42 pound lunker of the day.  Lunker smallmouth was caught by the team of Stephen Smolski and Bob Stasio.

With only one Trail tournament left, many TOC slots are still up for grabs.  With those teams fishing all five Trail tournaments able to drop their lowest point total, many teams are still in the running for a TOC slot.  Also at stake is the overall point championship for the Trail and the free 2016 Trail entry that goes with it.

The final Trail tournament will take place on Lake Winnisquam in September

John Wright/Peter Weeks Take Final Trail Event

TOC Field Set/Messenger & Levesque Top Trail

The final NEBA of NH trail event took place September 20th on a very windy Winnisquam Lake.  A cold front that passed through in the early morning produced very strong winds making fishing conditions very tough.  Several teams reported finding good schools of fish but they were unable to fish them due to the tough conditions. As always, someone finds the fish and once again it was the team of John Wright and Peter Weeks.

Wright and Weeks weighed in a mixed bag of largemouth and smallmouth weighing 18.85# beating out the first place 2015 Trail team of Rob Messenger and Josh Levesque.  Messenger and Levesque’s second place finish capped an outstanding season in which the team finished in the top three at every event they fished.  Their first place finish earned them free entry into all the 2016 NEBA of NH Trail events.  Third place honors went to the father/son team of John and John II Hooper.  This team also had a very consistent year and finished second in the final Trail standings. Fourth place went to Chris Fisher and Scott Villeneuve.  Their bag was anchored by the tournament lunker smallmouth weighing 3.83#.  Lunker largemouth went to Wright and Weeks. Their lunker weighed in at 3.52#.

With the Trail concluded, the TOC field is set. The top teams from this season will face off in the Tournament of Champions. This two-day, no entry fee event will take place on Conway Lake day1 and Ossipee Lake day 2.

Check the final Trail standings for the 11 teams that will fish this event.
